Cimetière des prussiens
GIROMAGNY90200 GIROMAGNY
The Prussian cemetery in Giromagny dates back to the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871. It is located at the southern entrance to the town.
After advancing rapidly through Alsace, Prussian troops "stumbled" on Belfort on 3 November 1870. The siege was long and deadly, and Belfort became a "Totenfabrik" (corpse factory) for the enemy. Giromagny, the largest town to the north of the stronghold, was home to two Prussian field hospitals and one Baden hospital. It is therefore not surprising to find Prussian graves. What is surprising is this discreet cemetery, surrounded by a stone wall overgrown with ivy. Very often, the dead soldiers were buried quickly in mass graves on private land.
Since 1966, this cemetery has been under the responsibility of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge (Service for the Maintenance of German Military Graves - S.E.S.M.A).
