54120 BACCARAT
During the 1st World War, the big bridge in Baccarat has been the place where takes place a murderous fight on 25th August 1914 (all informations on the document "The Battle of the Bridge", to consult at Tourist Centre in Baccarat).
At the beginning of the morning, the 86th Regiment of Infantry from Puy-en-Velay try to invade the right bank of river Meurthe. Three times, french soldiers attack this bridge, even if the german troops have installed several machine guns, jamming the access to the bridge.
On this bridge there has been more than 90 killed people and so many injured people. After this tragic summer day, on account of fights in the town and around Baccarat, the 86th Regiment has lost a great part of its strength.
As a result of this battle, the district (Bridge Street before, nowadays became Adrien Michaut Street) has catch fire and then the destruction was finished by the hands of german soldiers.
