Fantastic Nordic walking
Pole position in the Vosges Mountains!
Nordic walking is a healthy hiking sport that's accessible to everyone. It's a different, more active approach to walking. The practice accentuates the natural movement of the arms during walking and propels the body forward with the help of two poles so you can go faster and farther. The entire upper body is used during Nordic walking, in addition to the lower limbs, thus increasing the energy spent in the workout. It takes more effort than with traditional walking: the pace is faster, but you'll feel less tired at the end! The technique is relatively simple, so even beginners can enjoy the sport without a long or tedious learning phase. The valleys and hills of the Vosges Mountains bring a change of pace and landscapes throughout your outing. For a fun and secure experience, the Club Vosgien and the French Hiking Federation have marked out several trails to choose from depending on what you're looking for (time, difficulty level, tourist sites).
The history of a shared sport and leisure activity in the Vosges Mountains
Originally, this comprehensive sport was practiced by cross-country skiers in the summer to continue their training. The Vosges Mountains are known for skiing, and it’s no wonder that the area's generous cross-country skiers began sharing this activity with all types of hikers of all ages. On foot with poles in hand, a mountain guide leads you from warm-up to cool down, taking you through the forest to discover little-known, rare, and beautiful sites. No need to hit the gym, Nordic walking tones your body by using 80% of your muscles, all while breathing in the fresh air of the great outdoors in the forests of the Vosges Mountains.
A walk in the park!
An expert land for Nordic walking, the Vosges Mountains even have their own easy-to-handle and comfortable walking pole, specially adapted to the movements of fast-paced walking, with the necessary support for a powered step. Equipped with the right poles, cross the Vosges Mountains on the trail marked with a red rectangle, the GR5 / GR53 that follows the Sentier des Roches, the Sentier du Mur Païen at Mont Sainte-Odile, or the Fortified Castle Trail of Alsace.
